$1 Million Awarded to Implement Transit-Oriented Development Plan on International Boulevard in Oakland

One of the reasons why TransForm was so committed to making sure the East Bay Bus Rapid Transit project (BRT) is done right is because of the tremendous potential it has to become a catalyst for economic growth and infill in the form of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) along International Blvd.

To help ensure that any future investment along the corridor would result in meeting the needs of current residents along the corridor, TransForm and the Great Communities Collaborative helped win funding for the City of Oakland to work with non-traditional stakeholders in creating the award-winning International Blvd. TOD Plan.

To ensure that this plan didn’t simply end up on a shelf (especially now that  Redevelopment has been dissolved), TransForm worked with the City in writing a grant to the Strategic Growth Council that resulted in an award of $999,836 to implement the policies called out for in the plan, such as improving pedestrian safety and access to transit, building and protecting affordable housing while attracting more economic investment, creating assistance programs for small businesses, etc.

We look forward to working along the corridor in partnership with the City of Oakland and local community stakeholders for another 3 years to ensure not only that BRT is implemented in a way that responds to the communities’ needs, but that the economic investment it attracts also meets the communities’ needs.
